Jane Russo has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from PUC-Rio (1977), a Master's degree in Psychology (Social Psychology) from PUC-Rio (1982), a PhD in Social Anthropology (1991) from Museu Nacional (UFRJ) and a postdoctoral degree (2000) from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. She is currently a Full Professor at the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde Coletiva from UERJ. She has experience in the areas of collective health and anthropology of health, and she has published several works about the constitution of the “psy” field and about the psychological culture in Brazil. She is associated to the Centro Latino-Americano em Sexualidade e Direitos Humanos (IMS-UERJ), where she has conducted research regarding sexuality in psychiatric classifications, the institutionalization of contemporary sexology as a field of knowledge and action, as well as the emergence and consolidation of sexual medicine, and the consequent medicalization of male sexuality. She is currently investigating the role of the hormones testosterone and oxytocin (that are conceived, respectively, as vehicles for sexuality and affection) in the production of new ways of understanding/constructing the body and the subjectivity.
